Sudan Electricity Company: Steering the Sector Through Requires a New Financing Vision to Confront Current Challenges

Sudan Electricity Company’s Media Coordination Council said the power sector is at a critical juncture that demands concerted national efforts to ensure the continuity and quality of service amid the country’s exceptional circumstances.

The council pointed to the scale of systematic damage inflicted on power plants and transmission networks, alongside soaring production costs and spare parts, placing the sector under unprecedented operational strain.

It added that safeguarding what remains of the national power system, while rebuilding infrastructure destroyed by the war, requires realistic and disciplined management of economic resources.

The council also announced an increase in electricity tariffs across all consumption sectors, effective today, stating that the measure is necessary to secure revenues to cover maintenance costs and essential inputs. It noted that the state will continue to subsidize electricity costs while taking into account vulnerable consumer groups.

The council affirmed that citizens are a core partner in the process of “rebuilding and reform,” stressing that the current measures represent the viable option to avert a complete collapse of the electricity system.
