The General Authority for Geological Research (GAGR) announced that it issued 104 exploration licences during the first half of 2026, underscoring sustained investor interest in Sudan's mining sector.

Secretary of the Technical Mining Committee, Mohamed Abdel Gaioum, said the licences comprised 63 general prospecting licences and 41 unrestricted exploration licences. The committee also concluded 27 new mining tailings contracts and renewed two existing agreements, issued nine small-scale mining contracts, granted 45 trade names for sector activities, and signed three tripartite contracts for miners' stone.

Abdel Gaioum said gold accounts for approximately 90 per cent of all exploration applications submitted to the committee, while national and foreign companies are also pursuing exploration opportunities in copper, iron and lead.

He noted that mining activity is concentrated in the states of Red Sea, River Nile and Northern State, affirming that the Technical Mining Committee continues to regulate the sector and facilitate technical and legal procedures for investors.
