A Qatar Airways aircraft landed at Port Sudan International Airport on Thursday after arriving from Doha, marking the airline's first scheduled flight to Sudan following a three-year suspension. The Sudanese government described the occasion as a “landmark day” in the development of bilateral relations between Sudan and Qatar.
Sudan's Ambassador to Qatar, Badr-Eddin Abdullah, said the resumption of Qatar Airways' flights to Sudan was not a coincidence but “the result of the sacrifices made by the valiant Sudanese Armed Forces, the Joint Forces, and the supporting forces, which created the conditions necessary for the return of one of the world's leading airlines.”
Speaking to reporters at Port Sudan International Airport, he added: “We view this step as a reflection of the political will of the wise leadership in both countries, and we look forward to seeing Qatar Airways resume flights to Khartoum International Airport in the near future.”
The ambassador said the return of the Qatari national carrier would reinvigorate economic relations, create new opportunities for engagement between the business communities of both countries, and strengthen cooperation across cultural, media, and artistic fields.
He thanked all those who had contributed to the achievement, expressing confidence that it would pave the way for the return of more Arab and international airlines to Sudan. He also affirmed the readiness of the relevant authorities to provide all necessary support to expand Qatar Airways' services to Port Sudan, Khartoum, and other Sudanese cities.
For his part, Qatar's Ambassador to Sudan, Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Sada, said the launch of Qatar Airways' flights to Port Sudan had been widely anticipated and reflected the two countries' commitment to sustaining their deep bilateral ties at the diplomatic, economic, and social levels despite prevailing challenges.
He reaffirmed Qatar's continued support for Sudan's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and efforts to consolidate peace throughout the country, adding that Qatar would remain a steadfast partner to the Sudanese people until the country regained its rightful standing among nations.
Ambassador Al-Sada also commended the efforts of Qatar Airways, working in coordination with the relevant Sudanese authorities, to overcome operational challenges and resume services, describing the move as “a continuation of the genuine bridge of brotherhood between the two peoples.”
Meanwhile, Director of the Consular Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Anwar Ahmed, said the inauguration of Qatar Airways' first flight to Port Sudan represented “more than the addition of a new destination; it is a strong bridge linking Sudan with the outside world at this pivotal moment.”
He noted that the presence of a global carrier such as Qatar Airways would facilitate travel for citizens, expatriates, and traders, help stimulate the economy, and provide safe and convenient travel options.
Ambassador Anwar Ahmed welcomed the flight crew and accompanying delegation, describing Sudan as “their second home,” and expressed hope that the resumption of Qatar Airways' operations would be followed by the return of other Arab and international airlines to Port Sudan.
