Sudan, AfDB Group Discuss Expanding Financing to Support Economic ‎Recovery and Reconstruction

Sudan and AfDB

BANGKOK (Nabaa Sudan) — On the sidelines of the annual meetings ‎of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group ‎in Bangkok, Sudan’s Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. ‎Gebreil Ibrahim, met with the President of the African Development ‎Bank (AfDB) Group, Dr. Sidi Ould Tah, to explore avenues for expanding ‎development and technical financing to support Sudan’s economic ‎priorities.‎

The high-level bilateral discussions focused on increasing financing ‎allocations for Sudanese development projects and taking greater ‎advantage of specialized financing mechanisms designed to support ‎fragile states. Both sides explored prospects for expanding investments ‎in energy infrastructure, environmental protection, climate-related ‎initiatives, and the green economy to help Sudan build resilience ‎against ongoing climate and economic challenges.‎

A primary focus of the meeting was Sudan’s integration into the ‎‎”Mission 300″ initiative—a major effort co-led by the AfDB Group and ‎the World Bank Group aimed at extending electricity access to 300 ‎million people across Africa by 2030. Dr. Ibrahim emphasized that ‎securing access to this initiative is critical for stabilizing Sudan’s power ‎supply, driving industrial production, and stimulating private ‎investment.‎

Addressing immediate economic risks, the two sides discussed the ‎looming challenges facing the winter agricultural season due to ‎reduced rainfall. They highlighted the importance of using technical ‎evaluations and risk assessments from the Food and Agriculture ‎Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to determine necessary ‎interventions to safeguard national food security and support ‎agricultural yields.‎

The meeting also addressed ongoing efforts to modernize public ‎financial management in Sudan. Discussions covered technical ‎assistance for establishing a Treasury Single Account (TSA) system, a ‎process being undertaken in coordination with the Islamic ‎Development Bank and the IMF’s Middle East Technical Assistance ‎Center (METAC).‎

To bolster commercial stability, the meeting reviewed the completion ‎of procedures regarding Sudan’s $15 million capital contribution to ‎the African Trade and Investment Development Insurance (ATIDI). This ‎contribution will enable Sudan to leverage the agency's trade credit ‎and investment protection services to facilitate trade and attract ‎investment. Furthermore, the meeting addressed inclusive finance ‎initiatives, specifically exploring access to the Affirmative Finance ‎Action for Women in Africa (AFAWA) program to enhance financial ‎access and growth opportunities for women-led businesses.‎

Both sides concluded by reaffirming their commitment to maintaining ‎structured, continuous coordination between the Ministry of Finance ‎and the AfDB Group. By aligning available financial resources and ‎technical expertise with Sudan's core national priorities, both entities ‎aim to accelerate economic recovery, rebuild infrastructure, and lay ‎the foundation for sustainable long-term growth.‎
