Sudan Calls for Coordination Among Borrowing Nations and Global ‎Financial Reform

Gebreil Borrowing nations

BANGKOK (Nabaa Sudan — Sudan’s Minister of Finance and Economic ‎Planning, Dr. Gebreil Ibrahim, has called on borrowing nations to align ‎their positions on debt and development financing, urging structural ‎reforms to the international financial system to better support ‎developing and conflict-affected countries.‎

Speaking during a meeting of the Borrowers’ Platform held on the ‎sidelines of the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund ‎‎(IMF) and the World Bank Group in Bangkok, Dr. Ibrahim emphasized ‎that unity among borrowing states is crucial for achieving fiscal ‎sustainability, securing concessional financing, and building resilience ‎against global economic shocks.‎

The Minister urged borrowing nations to leverage the platform to lead ‎a unified, collective dialogue with creditors and international financial ‎institutions. He stressed that global financing systems must be ‎reformed to address the specific needs of developing nations, ‎particularly those navigating economic fragility and armed conflict.‎

Detailing the severe domestic fallout from the conflict that broke out ‎in April 2023, Dr. Ibrahim noted that the ongoing war has devastated ‎Sudan’s economy, crippled public infrastructure, and drained essential ‎services. He underlined the critical need for effective international ‎partnerships and sustainable financial resources to fund economic ‎recovery and reconstruction.‎

Dr. Ibrahim also highlighted the Borrowers' Platform as a key ‎mechanism to enhance public debt management capabilities and ‎coordinate debt relief. He reiterated Sudan's focus on completing its ‎requirements under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) ‎Initiative, which would grant the country substantial debt relief and ‎create the fiscal room required to fund vital public services and ‎development projects.‎

Reaffirming Sudan’s commitment to active engagement within the ‎platform, Dr. Ibrahim called for responsive, crisis-oriented financing ‎mechanisms and greater international cooperation to help fragile ‎nations transition toward stability and sustainable development.‎
