From Al-Damer to Japan: Sudanese Medical Team Presents Rare Liver Case at International Conference

Kumamoto, Japan, (Nabaa Sudan) – A Sudanese medical experience has moved from local clinical practice at Al-Damer Hospital in River Nile State to an international scientific platform in Kumamoto, Japan, where a Sudanese medical team, led by internal medicine specialist at Al-Damer Hospital Dr. Mohamed Sid Ahmed and comprising Dr. Anfal Abdel-Azim Abbas Tayfour and Dr. Shajan Imad-Eddin Atiya Majzoub, presented a research paper on a rare liver condition as part of the APASL STC 2026 Kumamoto Congress, organized by the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL).

The paper, titled “A Rare Case of Hemochromatosis in a Young Female Patient Presenting Similarly to Acute Viral Hepatitis,” examines a case diagnosed and followed up at Al-Damer Hospital, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis of hereditary iron disorders, particularly in cases whose symptoms and clinical presentation may resemble those of other liver diseases.

The participation is particularly significant because the research originated from a clinical case managed at Al-Damer Hospital and reached an international specialized liver disease conference in Kumamoto, Japan, reflecting the presence of Sudanese medical and research professionals at international scientific forums.

The conference received more than 350 scientific abstracts from various countries and disciplines, providing the Sudanese team with an opportunity to present its clinical experience at a specialized scientific gathering addressing the latest issues in liver diseases.

The paper underscores the importance of documenting rare cases and transforming everyday clinical experience into research, particularly in regional hospitals, thereby contributing to medical knowledge and facilitating the exchange of expertise with institutions and scientific communities outside Sudan.

This achievement comes at a time when Sudan’s health sector faces major challenges. Nevertheless, the continued engagement of medical professionals in research and international scientific participation highlights another aspect of Sudanese doctors’ efforts to maintain academic and professional activity and advance medical practice.

The participating team commended the support provided by the River Nile State Government, led by the State Wali, in supporting the health sector, medical professionals, and scientific research. The team also expressed appreciation for the support and encouragement provided by officials at Al-Damer Hospital, led by Dr. Alaa-Eddin Amin and Dr. Afaf, the hospital’s medical director, for their encouragement of scientific participation.

The team also praised the scientific support and guidance provided by Dr. Muawiya Sidahmed, a gastroenterology and hepatology specialist, noting that his guidance enriched the research work and encouraged the team to continue documenting cases and participating in international scientific conferences.

From Al-Damer to Kumamoto, a rare clinical case was transformed into cross-border scientific research, bringing the name of Al-Damer Hospital, River Nile State, and Sudan to an international conference specializing in liver diseases and demonstrating the ability of Sudanese medical expertise to reach international scientific platforms despite the challenges facing the country’s health sector.
