The Civil Society Initiative in Sudan’s Blue Nile Region has warned of deteriorating humanitarian and health conditions among some 42,271 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Geissan locality and border areas with Ethiopia, including 24,266 children, amid shortages of food, water, shelter, and healthcare services.
In a statement issued Thursday, the initiative said large numbers of displaced people are living in the open, warning of increased risks of disease and malnutrition amid the ongoing rainy season and difficulties in accessing affected areas.
The initiative called on the parties to the conflict to immediately cease hostilities for humanitarian purposes and open safe corridors for aid. It also appealed to the United Nations, humanitarian organizations, and donors to provide displaced people with their basic needs.
