A spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Farid Al-Hamid, said that managing and identifying human remains represents an extremely serious humanitarian challenge in Sudan, citing reports that more than 20,000 bodies have been recovered and buried in Khartoum alone.
In an interview with Sudan Tribune, Al-Hamid explained that in many cases, burials were carried out without adequate documentation or records, warning that the absence of proper documentation could make it more difficult in the future to identify the deceased and determine the fate of missing persons.
ICRC spokesperson noted that the ICRC is working to support the safe and dignified management of human remains, helping to facilitate the future identification of the deceased and provide answers to their families.
He added that during the first half of 2026, the ICRC distributed more than 6,400 body bags and trained first responders on safe burial practices and the proper handling of human remains.
