Kordofan Observatory Calls for Urgent Rescue Efforts at Collapsed Gold Mine

Kordofan Observortory

The Kordofan Observatory said eyewitness accounts confirmed the absence of any specialized rescue efforts for victims of the collapse of Al-Zara'a mine in Fuga area, northwest of Al-Nohod in West Kordofan State. It said the unstable sandy terrain was hampering residents’ attempts to rescue those trapped and recover the bodies using rudimentary means.

The observatory added that there were indications that several miners remained alive underground after one survivor emerged on Tuesday and confirmed that others were still alive.

It said more than 70 traditional miners were killed or remained missing after a group of adjacent mine shafts collapsed, urging the relevant authorities and humanitarian organizations to intervene urgently and provide drilling equipment and technical teams to rescue those trapped and recover the victims.
