Sudan Urges UN Security Council to Address Conditions of Nearly 20,000 Detainees in South Darfur Prisons

The Sudanese government has called on the UN Security Council to take urgent action regarding conditions at Daqris Prison in Nyala and Shala Prison in Al-Fashir.

It said approximately 19,800 detainees and prisoners, including military personnel, civilians, and 690 women, are being held at Daqris Prison under what it described as catastrophic humanitarian and health conditions. Shala Prison, it added, holds 881 military prisoners and 407 civilians, including 113 children.

The government said around 300 injured detainees had died over the past two months due to a lack of medical care and reported a cholera outbreak inside Shala Prison.

It accused the terrorist rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia of subjecting detainees to torture, starvation, denial of medical treatment, and extrajudicial executions, and called for international intervention to address the situation.
