Ethiopia, (Nabaa Sudan) – Ethiopian Airlines announced Wednesday that it had suspended flights to three airports in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region due to the “current situation” in the region.
The company said the suspension covers airports in Mekelle, the regional capital, Shire and Axum, without providing further details.
Reuters quoted two local sources as saying that Tigrayan forces seized Mekelle Airport overnight and took control of its administration from the federal police. Spokespersons for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the federal government did not respond to requests for comment.
On Sunday, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front announced the formation of an alliance with six other armed groups across Ethiopia with the aim of overthrowing the government of Abiy Ahmed.
