UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for accountability for countries supplying weapons to parties to the conflict when those weapons are used on a large scale to attack civilians.
Speaking to reporters in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Guterres described the humanitarian situation in Sudan as “devastating,” adding that the suffering of the Sudanese people is “intolerable.”
He said the Sudanese themselves bear responsibility because they are divided and fighting one another, while noting that the conflict is “fueled by several foreign countries.”
“We do not have intelligence services, but the UN Security Council’s Panel of Experts analyzed this issue, and the conclusions are clear,” he said. “In my view, there should be accountability for this kind of intervention, when some countries supply weapons to parties to a conflict and those weapons are used on a large scale to attack civilians.”
