Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State, witnessed a new military escalation as the Sudanese Air Force carried out airstrikes targeting the city, hours after a cargo aircraft arrived from Ethiopia, amid indications of increased regional air activity linked to the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
Reports indicated that an Ilyushin Il-76TD cargo aircraft landed at Nyala Airport after departing from Ethiopia’s Harar Meda Air Base. Shortly after the aircraft landed, Sudanese warplanes carried out a series of airstrikes against targets inside the city.
In a related development concerning air activity in the region, recent field data showed that runway markings at Ethiopia’s Assosa Airport, located near the Sudanese border, had been renewed, suggesting preparations to accommodate increased air traffic.
This coincided with multiple visits by IL-76TD cargo aircraft linked to the government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which have landed at the airport several times over the past few weeks.
