PORT SUDAN, (Nabaa Sudan) — Chairman of the Higher Committee of the International Sudanese Ports Conference, Hassan Jaafar, announced that preparations have been completed for the conference, which will be held in Port Sudan on Sunday and Monday, with the participation of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), affiliated with the League of Arab States.
Speaking during the regular media forum of the Ministry of Culture and Information, Jaafar said the conference, held under the theme “Towards Sudanese Ports,” will feature 16 scientific papers, including 12 presented by international experts and four by local experts.
He explained that the conference will discuss the modernization of handling procedures and challenges related to infrastructure, berths, equipment, yards, and storage, as well as supply chains, the flow of trade, and local and international laws governing port operations.
The conference will also address global competition over ports and strategic partnerships.
Jaafar said the Sudanese Sea Ports Corporation (SPC) is seeking partnerships in the construction of berths, yards, and other facilities in a manner that serves the interests of the SPC and the country, while also focusing on training human resources to operate modern mechanized systems and automation.
For his part, Rapporteur of the Higher Committee of the Conference Awad Al-Bari pointed to efforts to develop Sudanese ports, including modernizing handling mechanisms, increasing capacity, and providing alternative energy, noting that Berth No. 22 had been completed in accordance with international standards to accommodate large vessels.
Al-Bari said moving the conference, which was previously held in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, to Port Sudan represents a “major sovereign gain for Sudan,” highlighting the country’s strategic location on the Red Sea and the opportunities it provides for development and investment in the ports sector.
He added that the partnerships proposed by the Sudanese Sea Ports Corporations do not mean privatization, but rather come within the framework of development and governance requirements, noting that the conference aims to develop a scientific vision for the development and investment of Sudanese ports.
