Ethiopian Minister of Water and Energy Habtamu Itefa said that the flow of Nile waters toward downstream countries would be under Ethiopia’s control, reaffirming Addis Ababa’s intention to proceed with the construction of additional dams along the river on the pretext of achieving sustainable development and the equitable use of water resources.
The remarks coincided with media reports about Ethiopian plans to construct three additional dams with a targeted combined storage capacity of approximately 140 billion cubic meters, potentially bringing Ethiopia’s total dam storage capacity to around 224 billion cubic meters.
The developments come amid the continuing dispute between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia over the rules governing the operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and the management of Nile waters. Cairo and Khartoum continue to insist on the need for a legally binding agreement that safeguards the rights and interests of the downstream countries and prevents harm to them.
