A Qatari court sentenced Al-Waleed Madbou to one year in prison, a fine of 50,000 Qatari riyals, and permanent deportation from Qatar. The sentence was handed down on Thursday in a criminal case filed against him by Ambassador Dr. Amira Qurnas, wife of Ali Ahmed Karti, Secretary-General of the Islamic Movement.
The verdict came after Madbou was found guilty of defamation and slander through an online article containing statements that the court described as a direct attack on the plaintiff's honour and dignity.
Ambassador Dr. Amira Qurnas appeared before the court represented by her lawyer, Dr. Siddiq Ali Babiker, who is accredited to Qatari courts and who represented her throughout the proceedings.
