A cleaner was killed and another injured after an explosive remnant of war detonated while they were carrying out cleaning and maintenance work on Monday afternoon inside Khadija bint Khuwaylid Dormitory at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Khartoum in Shambat.
The two workers were employed by Al-Safax Services Company. The blast severed the right hand of the deceased worker, who later succumbed to his injuries, while the other worker was also injured in the incident.
The Bahri Locality Security Committee inspected the site, while police confirmed that legal procedures had been initiated and a case registered. The injured workers were taken to Haj Al-Safi Hospital, before one of them was transferred to the Medical Corps Hospital. The other later died from his severe injuries.
The locality’s Security Committee directed institutions, companies, and contractors not to carry out maintenance, cleaning, or excavation work without first coordinating with and obtaining approval from the Mine Action and Explosive Remnants of War Division. It also called for continued awareness campaigns, clearance of suspected sites, and securing such locations.
