Education Cannot Wait Fund Announces $22 Million Project to Support Education in Sudan

Education Cannot Wait (ECW) Executive Director Yasmine Sherif announced a $22 million, three-year project to support the resilience of Sudan’s education system and assist students affected by the country’s difficult circumstances.

Speaking at an event organized by Save the Children in Khartoum to discuss children’s education in Sudan, Sherif said the fund is currently operating in Khartoum to support Sudanese students amid the ongoing crisis.

The project aims to reach more than 200,000 students in urgent need of assistance, including 60 percent girls and 10 percent children with disabilities.

The programme will focus on war-affected states, particularly Darfur, South Kordofan and Al-Gadharef, and will be implemented in partnership with international and local organizations, including Save the Children, the Child Protection Foundation, Peace Foundation, Sadaqat Foundation, the Ministry of Education and other partners.

Dr. Muna Ibrahim Al-Faki, Director of the Organizations Directorate at the Ministry of National Education in Khartoum State, welcomed the initiative and praised donors and education partners for supporting the project.
She said 533,000 primary-school children are currently in Khartoum State and expressed hope that the project would help address the major gaps and needs facing the education sector, particularly as the war has damaged educational institutions and the state continues to host displaced people from unsafe areas.
Education Cannot Wait is a global fund established by the United Nations in 2016 to support education for children and young people affected by emergencies and protracted crises.
