KAUDA, South KORDOFAN — Field sources reported a mass flight of forces affiliated with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement–North (SPLM-N), led by Abdelaziz Al-Hilu, from Kauda after Atoro tribal fighters tightened their control over the strategic town in South Kordofan.
According to the sources, the withdrawal followed intensified clashes between SPLM-N forces and armed Atoro elements in and around Kauda, amid a deepening internal confrontation that has significantly affected security and stability in the area.
The latest development would represent a major setback for the SPLM-N, given Kauda’s longstanding importance as the movement’s principal political and military stronghold. The town has traditionally served as the center of the SPLM-N’s administration and military operations in the Nuba Mountains.
The conflict between the SPLM-N and Atoro fighters has escalated over recent months. Earlier reports documented heavy fighting in Kauda and surrounding areas, accompanied by civilian displacement and widespread insecurity. Reports also indicated that Atoro fighters had challenged the authority of the SPLM-N in the area and that the confrontation had developed into a broader internal crisis.
Field sources said the latest movements involved significant numbers of SPLM-N personnel leaving positions in and around Kauda as Atoro fighters consolidated their presence in the town.
The flight of SPLM-N forces could have significant military and political implications for the movement, potentially weakening its grip on one of its most important strongholds and reshaping the balance of power in parts of South Kordofan.
