Global Campaign Opposes Potential UAE Nomination of Lana ‎Nusseibeh for UN Secretary-General

International Campaign Against UAE Nominee to UN

New York (Nabaa Sudan) – A global campaign has been launched to ‎oppose the potential nomination of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) ‎diplomat Lana Nusseibeh for the position of Secretary-General of the ‎United Nations, under the slogan “No Accountability, No Mandate.” ‎

The campaign comes in response to reports that the United Arab ‎Emirates nominated Nusseibeh on October 21 to lead the ‎international organization. In a video released as part of the campaign, ‎she appeared announcing her candidacy, saying: “I stand to be the ‎Secretary-General of the United Nations because I believe this ‎moment calls for effective leadership.”‎

The campaign opposing the nomination draws on sharp criticism of ‎the UAE’s foreign and domestic policy record, warning against ‎entrusting leadership of the world’s foremost peace organization to a ‎representative of a government it accuses of arming repressive ‎militias.‎

The campaign outlined a series of accusations and human rights and ‎UN reports concerning Abu Dhabi. These included accusations that the ‎UAE had facilitated genocide in Sudan by supporting and arming the ‎Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia. The campaign cited UN ‎documentation of the killing of more than 6,000 people in El-Fasher ‎over three days, as well as Amnesty International’s findings concerning ‎the use of weapons believed to have been supplied by the UAE.‎
