Sudan Highlights War’s Impact on Education and Culture at UNESCO, ‎Calls for Reconstruction Support

UNICECO

Paris, (Nabaa Sudan) – Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the ‎United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ‎‎(UNESCO), Ambassador Hamid Al-Jozouli Khalid, stated that the war ‎waged by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia has affected ‎citizens and all sectors within UNESCO’s mandate. He said the militia ‎had deliberately sought to destabilize the education process and ‎deprive younger generations of their national memory through the ‎systematic targeting and destruction of educational and cultural ‎institutions.‎

He made these remarks in Sudan’s statement before the 225th session ‎of UNESCO’s Executive Board, held at the organization’s headquarters ‎in Paris.‎

The ambassador thanked all countries that had contributed to the ‎special account for Sudan established by UNESCO to support efforts to ‎reconstruct and restore institutions within its mandate. He called on ‎the remaining member states to make active contributions to the ‎fund.‎

For his part, the representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and ‎spokesperson for the Arab Group at UNESCO stated that the ‎systematic destruction of Sudan’s cultural institutions and property by ‎the RSF militia required concerted efforts by the organization and all ‎member states to reconstruct and restore what the war had ‎destroyed.‎
