Khartoum, (Nabaa Sudan) – UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Sudan Pekka Haavisto met with a number of Sudanese church leaders in Khartoum to hear about the situation of Christian communities and the impact of the war on places of worship and Christian institutions.
The church leaders briefed Haavisto on the extensive damage to churches and affiliated facilities in Khartoum and several states, as well as what they described as discriminatory practices and violations against Christians during the Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) control of the capital. They said church leaders remained in Khartoum alongside their congregations throughout the conflict, continuing to provide religious and social services until the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) regained control of the capital.
They also briefed the UN envoy on government efforts to rehabilitate damaged places of worship and address religious discrimination, highlighting TSC President General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan’s attention to the reconstruction of churches and his continued engagement with church leaders. They said these efforts form part of broader initiatives to promote equality and religious and social coexistence in the post-war period.
