Khartoum (Nabaa Sudan) – Minni Arko Minawi, Governor of the Darfur Region and General Supervisor of the Joint Forces, said he would not return to rebellion unless avenues for dialogue were closed and voices rejecting the restoration of the “Janjaweed state” continued to be ignored.
Addressing activists and members of his movement in Khartoum, Minnawi said his opposition to the “Janjaweed” reflected the position of everyone. He warned that protests could escalate into taking up arms if voices opposing the return of the “Janjaweed” continued to go unheard.
Minawi stressed that armed movements were not militias, saying they had sacrificed thousands of lives to preserve Sudan’s unity. He warned against pushing the country towards division, noting that the war had ceased to be confined to two parties just 24 hours after it erupted in April 2023.
On 7 October, during a political gathering in Khartoum, Minawi had declared his opposition to the formation of any new militias, vowing to rebel against any state that reconstituted the “Janjaweed” militias.
The Joint Forces have been fighting alongside the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since November 2023, after ending approximately seven months of neutrality following the outbreak of the war.
