Nabaa Sudan – The Democratic Party has taken control of both chambers of the United States Congress, securing a majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate, according to the Associated Press (AP).
The party scored historic victories in states traditionally regarded as Republican strongholds, while securing 218 seats in the House of Representatives, the number required to obtain a majority.
The Republican Party also lost control of the Senate, the second chamber of the US Congress.
Projections indicate that the number of seats won by the Democrats in the House could rise to more than 250.
Historic Democratic Victories in Republican Strongholds
The Democrats made significant gains in the Senate elections after the Associated Press declared victories for the party’s candidates in several states traditionally regarded as Republican strongholds, most notably Texas, South Carolina and Kansas.
In Texas, a Democratic candidate won a Senate seat for the first time since 1988, while South Carolina witnessed the party’s first victory in more than 30 years.
The victory in Kansas was even more historic, with the Democrats winning a Senate seat in the state for the first time in 96 years. The party’s candidates also won in Ohio, Iowa and Maine.
In Michigan, Democrat Abdulrahman El-Sayed, known as “Abdul”, secured a significant victory, becoming the first Muslim ever elected to the United States Senate.
