The Planning and Policies Directorate at the Ministry of National Education organized a national consultative workshop on Sunday in Omdurman to develop Sudan’s education and climate change strategy, in cooperation with the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), UNESCO, and the Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture, with the participation of representatives from several ministries, academic institutions, and relevant bodies.

The opening session was addressed by Minister of National Education Dr. Al-Tohami Al-Zain Hajar, in the presence of representatives from the University of Khartoum and the ministries of Agriculture, Health, Irrigation, and Water Resources, in addition to directorates and affiliated bodies of the ministry.

The minister said the ministry has launched a series of workshops from 26 to 30 June, covering the strategic framework for education and climate change, the cost of inaction in education, and inclusive education.

He explained that these activities are part of the reform framework included in the Transitional Education Plan (2025–2027), prepared by ministry experts under the supervision of UNESCO.

The minister praised the partnership with UNESCO, commending its technical support in implementing reform programs and developing education policies, which contribute to strengthening the education system’s capacity to address future challenges.

For his part, Director and Representative of the UNESCO Office in Sudan, Ahmed Junaid Suresh, said the organization views education as a key pillar for achieving sustainable development, expressing his satisfaction with the launch of the education and climate change strategy in partnership with the Ministry of National Education.

He stated that UNESCO will deploy its technical and knowledge expertise to support the preparation and completion of the strategy in the coming weeks and months, and to work with the ministry to implement it on the ground. He also praised the ministry’s efforts and leadership in advancing education reform, affirming the depth of cooperation between the two sides to build a more sustainable future for education in Sudan.

The workshop aims to launch the process of developing a national strategy for education and climate change by building a shared understanding of challenges and opportunities, and analyzing the impacts of climate change on the education sector, including floods, droughts, and damage to educational infrastructure.
