Prime Minister Dr. Kamil Idris chaired an expanded meeting on Saturday with ministers and representatives of police and security agencies to discuss challenges related to regulating the mining sector, combating gold smuggling and narcotics trafficking, and measures to address them.

Minister of Information, Culture, Tourism and Antiquities Khalid Al-Eisir said the meeting commended the efforts and sacrifices made by intelligence, police, and military agencies in safeguarding the national economy.

The meeting reviewed the risks posed by narcotics smuggling through Sudanese territory, describing it as part of a multifaceted war targeting the Sudanese people, particularly the youth.

Al-Eisir said the meeting underscored the need to confront smuggling decisively and combat narcotics as a national security priority. It also called for strengthening information-sharing mechanisms among relevant state institutions and establishing specialized addiction treatment centers, with particular attention to affected youth.

The meeting further discussed the adverse effects of unregulated mining and associated activities on public health and the environment, as well as measures required to mitigate those impacts.

The Prime Minister directed the removal of grinding mills and processing ponds from residential neighborhoods and military areas, and ordered the urgent regulation of gold markets in production zones. He also instructed authorities to intensify public awareness campaigns on the dangers of unregulated mining and hazardous substances used in gold extraction.

The meeting additionally stressed the importance of the Ministry of Minerals issuing awareness bulletins on the risks of chemical substances used in mining and dispatching outreach teams to mining communities.

Al-Eisir said the meeting also emphasized the issuance of identification cards for miners and direct awareness programs on the dangers of hazardous materials used in gold extraction, while commending miners’ contribution to the national economy and underscoring the importance of protecting workers’ health and safety in the sector.
