The Sudanese Embassy in London expressed concern over the publication by The Daily Telegraph on June 11, 2026, of inaccurate and unsubstantiated information regarding the Belfast incident in an article entitled “Sudanese Belfast Stabbing Suspect Was a Former Police Officer.”

In a statement, the embassy referred to its June 10 press release, in which it strongly condemned the crime in Belfast and expressed sympathy for the victim and his family.

The embassy stressed the importance of allowing legal proceedings to take their course without media speculation or unverified claims.

It said the report relied heavily on information attributed to an individual in Libya described as a friend of the suspect. The embassy noted that this account contradicts information in The Daily Telegraph’s June 9 report, which cited the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) as saying the suspect arrived in Belfast in February 2023 from Dublin after flying from Paris. It said the inconsistency raises serious questions about the credibility of the account.

The embassy said the suspect had never served in the Sudanese police or any other security institution and remains registered as a student in Sudan’s civil registry.

It added that Sudanese law requires police personnel to be formally registered in the civil registry in that capacity.

The embassy rejected claims that the suspect originated from Karima in northern Sudan or that he belonged to a politically influential family, saying his family is ordinary and has no known political involvement.

It also stressed that criminal responsibility is individual and does not extend to family members, including his two brothers residing in the United Kingdom.

The embassy said it had informed The Daily Telegraph of the inaccuracies and requested corrections, but no amendments had been made.

It concluded that the spread of inaccurate information could affect ongoing investigations and place innocent individuals at risk.
