Minister Plenipotentiary Mai Ibrahim, Deputy Permanent Representative of Sudan to the United Nations in Geneva, delivered on Wednesday the Arab Group statement, presented by Sudan in its capacity as Chair of the Arab Group in Geneva, during the high-level panel discussion held at the Human Rights Council on the occasion of the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, which focused on women’s rights in representation in decision-making positions.
The statement expressed deep concern over the challenges faced by women and girls, particularly in the context of armed conflicts, where they bear a heavy burden as a result of escalating violence and the collapse of protection systems.
The Deputy Permanent Representative, speaking on behalf of the Group, reaffirmed the firm commitment of Arab states to empowering women and enhancing their effective participation in public and political life and decision-making processes. She highlighted the notable progress achieved by Arab countries in strengthening women’s presence in leadership positions, legislative bodies, and diplomatic work.
The Arab Group also reaffirmed the importance of continuing efforts to remove social and cultural barriers that hinder women’s participation, and to expand empowerment opportunities in ways that strengthen their role in peacebuilding, security, and development, as well as enhancing their presence within the United Nations and multilateral international work.
