PORT SUDAN (Nabaa Sudan) – Commander of the Sudanese Naval Forces, Lieutenant General (Navy) Mahjoub Bushra Ahmed Rahma, stressed that achieving peace, stability and prosperity in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region requires stronger dialogue and cooperation, respect for state sovereignty, and addressing the root causes of conflicts and security, political and economic challenges, away from confrontation.
Addressing the International Symposium on the Horn of Africa, held as part of the Port Sudan International Forum 2026, he said Sudan’s strategic location on the Red Sea coast makes it a link between Africa and the Arab world, noting that political, economic and security interests are closely intertwined across the region.
He explained that the region faces challenges including conflicts, border and Red Sea security, climate change, and economic and development pressures. At the same time, he highlighted its abundant natural and human resources and promising opportunities for integration in trade, investment, infrastructure, energy, agriculture, food security, education and technology.
The naval commander underscored the need to move beyond diagnosing crises towards finding practical and sustainable solutions, and from managing disputes towards expanding areas of understanding and cooperation in ways that serve the shared interests of the region’s peoples.
He affirmed that the future of the Horn of Africa must be shaped by the will of its states and peoples, while benefiting from positive international partnerships that help strengthen regional capabilities without compromising independent decision-making or national sovereignty.
He noted that the symposium, organised by the Horn of Africa Studies and Research Centre in Port Sudan, aims to foster constructive dialogue among experts, academics, diplomats and policymakers, and to develop practical recommendations and perspectives that can be further refined and implemented to enhance prospects for peace, stability and prosperity in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.
