Prime Minister Professor Kamil Idris underscored the imperative of national solidarity and the need to remain fully alert to the sensitivity of the current phase, which requires cohesion and the achievement of national objectives in the Battle of Dignity, ending the rebellion, and safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity.
He highlighted the crucial role played by the media and the efforts undertaken by journalists in fulfilling their national duty.
“The responsibility to defend the country and protect its people and soil is shared by all,” he stated, adding that the media has fully carried out its role despite the harsh circumstances endured by all segments of the Sudanese population, including those working in the media and press.
During his meeting early Thursday with the Chairman of the Sudanese Journalists Union (SJU) Al-Sadiq Al-Rizaiqi, while en route back to the country, the Prime Minister affirmed the government’s commitment to improving the media and press environment and creating conditions conducive to sound, responsible journalistic practice. He reiterated the government’s resolve to guarantee full freedom for media institutions and to remove all impediments to the application of the principle of the right to access information.
Idris called on journalists to engage in serious dialogue on media, press, and societal issues, and to contribute effectively to shaping a unified national vision that supports cohesion and shields the country from discord, polarization, and division, while upholding professional standards and ethical codes.
The Prime Minister further affirmed the government’s determination to review legislation regulating journalistic work, improve the social conditions of media professionals, and restore media institutions to full operational capacity in accordance with the government’s reconstruction plan and its efforts to repair war-related damage.
In this context, he announced the necessity of closing all disputes arising from misunderstandings and natural tensions between official bodies and some media actors. He instructed that the complaints recently filed against several journalists—which had sparked considerable debate in recent days—be dropped, calling for this chapter to be closed. He urged journalists to continue playing their role in supporting the Battle of Dignity, standing with the Armed Forces, promoting unity, consolidating ranks, and confronting the challenges at hand.
For his part, SJU Chairman Al-Sadiq Al-Rizaiqi, stated that journalists are at the heart of the battle, defending their nation and people with their lives and blood, without seeking favour or recognition. He noted that the SJU is preparing to undertake a range of measures to address the current situation of the press, defend its members, establish general frameworks that uphold press freedom, enhance journalists’ sense of responsibility, and reinforce adherence to professional standards and the Press Code of Honour.
He expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for responding to the Union’s initiative and for swiftly directing the withdrawal of complaints against several journalists, particularly the most recent complaint filed against journalist Azmi Abdel-Razig.
