The General Authority for Geological Research stated that the earthquake felt by residents of River Nile State earlier this week is classified as a dam-induced quake linked to the Merowe Dam and its artificial lake.
The Authority added that the quake was shallow (less than 10 kilometres deep) and was felt in Aws, Al-Ashameen, Sur Island, and several neighbouring villages, noting that its magnitude ranged between 1 and 3 on the Richter scale, with no significant damage reported.
It confirmed that the seismic activity is associated with the filling and operation of the dam and is under continuous monitoring to ensure residents’ safety.
