Umma Party: Attacks on Civilian Objects May Constitute War Crimes; ‎Calls for an End to Fighting

KHARTOUM (Nabaa Sudan) – The Umma Party strongly condemned ‎attacks carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) using drones, ‎targeting civilian objects, infrastructure and public institutions in ‎several parts of Sudan, including Al-Gadharef, Khashm Al-Girba, ‎Damazin and the capital, Khartoum.‎

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party affirmed that these attacks ‎jeopardise the lives of innocent civilians, exacerbate their suffering and ‎cause serious damage to state institutions and vital facilities, which ‎are public property belonging to the Sudanese people and constitute a ‎fundamental pillar for the continued provision of essential services.‎

The statement explained that targeting civilian objects, public facilities ‎and infrastructure raise serious concerns about violations of ‎international humanitarian law and may constitute a war crime where ‎the legal elements are met. It stressed the need to respect the rules of ‎international humanitarian law and protect civilians and civilian ‎property.‎

The Umma Party reiterated its position that dialogue and negotiations ‎are the best way to end the war and protect civilians. It called for ‎reason and wisdom to prevail and for serious efforts to be made to ‎halt the fighting, spare citizens the horrors and catastrophic ‎consequences of war, including loss of life, property damage and the ‎destruction of the country’s resources.‎

The party urged all concerned parties to assume their national and ‎humanitarian responsibilities, work to protect civilians and safeguard ‎state institutions and public facilities, and create the appropriate ‎conditions for achieving peace and stability while preserving Sudan’s ‎unity and the security of its people.‎
