(Nabaa Sudan) – Human Rights Watch has accused United Arab Emirates (UAE) diplomat Lana Nusseibeh of spending years denying abuses and covering up her country’s role in the conflicts in Sudan and Yemen, as the UAE formally nominates her for the post of United Nations Secretary-General.
The organization said Nusseibeh had used her official positions to mislead international public opinion and dismiss documented UN reports establishing Abu Dhabi’s involvement in providing military and logistical support to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). It also accused her of disavowing fact-finding reports on violations and crimes committed in Darfur and the city of El-Fasher.
The organization added that the Emirati diplomat had led intensive lobbying campaigns targeting the European Parliament and international institutions to refute charges concerning arms transfers and the recruitment of foreign mercenaries for the RSF.
It said UN and field reports had established clear evidence that fighters had transited through UAE bases and that drones equipped with munitions originally sold to the UAE Armed Forces had been used. According to the organization, this undermines the official claims repeatedly made by Nusseibeh’s office that the UAE’s involvement was limited to providing humanitarian assistance.
Human Rights Watch questioned Nusseibeh’s ability to lead the international organization and her commitment to accountability mechanisms, noting her refusal to provide direct answers to questions from member organizations regarding her position on UN reports concerning the very institution she seeks to head.
The organization stressed that Nusseibeh’s record of covering up violations by the coalition in Yemen and supporting parties to the conflict in Sudan requires firm action by UN member states to safeguard the independence of the United Nations and the integrity of its independent investigative bodies.
