The Arqin border crossing on the Sudan–Egypt border is experiencing a state of high alert after convoys arrived carrying thousands of Sudanese nationals deported from Egypt, most of whom work in the artisanal mining sector. The influx has created logistical challenges that exceed the crossing’s capacity and limited resources.
Brigadier General Dr. Mubarak Dawud, Director of the crossing, said authorities were surprised by the arrival of 26 buses early Friday carrying more than 2,500 Sudanese deportees, who were transferred via the Egyptian city of Edfu. He noted that the administration rushed to provide basic food and water assistance despite limited supplies.
Dawud issued an urgent appeal to the federal government and the Northern State authorities to intervene immediately to provide medical and food support and to ensure the safe onward transportation of the returnees, warning of a worsening humanitarian situation as additional groups are expected to arrive in the coming hours.
