Southern Libya is witnessing a rapid military escalation led by forces affiliated with Saddam Haftar, which have deployed units to assert control over desert crossings and border corridors adjacent to Chad, Niger, and Algeria, including the Salvador Corridor and the Golden Belt.
Security and diplomatic assessments indicate that the moves are aimed at gaining control over lucrative financial flows, informal trade routes, and gold and fuel smuggling networks, amid international reports pointing to the continued provision of Emirati military and logistical support to Haftar's camp.
The campaign, however, faces intense local and tribal competition for influence, particularly from Mohamed Wardougo, head of the Southern Liberation Operations Room and a figure closely associated with the Tebu tribes.
Observers note that the outcome of the struggle in this strategically important region will depend not only on military superiority but also on the ability of competing actors to secure the allegiance of local tribes, which have historically controlled key trans-Saharan trade and smuggling routes.
