Cairo, (Nabaa Sudan) – Energy Minister Engineer Motasem Ibrahim Ahmed said talks with the Egyptian side on cooperation in the electricity and energy sectors had yielded positive results.
The talks were attended by the Wali of Northern State and the Director General of the Sudanese Electricity Transmission Company, as well as Hani Salah, Assistant Egyptian Foreign Minister for Sudan and South Sudan Affairs.
The minister confirmed that the electricity supply exported from Egypt to Sudan had currently increased to 75 megawatts (MW), following an agreement to raise it from 50 MW to 80 MW.
He said the current increase would help meet the requirements of the agricultural season in Northern State, in addition to supporting the residential sector.
The two sides agreed to accelerate the completion of the second phase of the Egypt-Sudan electricity interconnection project and increase its capacity to 300 MW, with the eventual goal of reaching 1,000 MW. They also agreed to cooperate in rehabilitating electricity networks, generation plants, and transformers that were damaged during the past period.
The talks also covered training and capacity building for the Sudanese workforce, as well as cooperation on solar and wind energy projects.
For his part, Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Dr. Mahmoud Ismat affirmed his country’s continued support for Sudan and its readiness to provide the expertise, equipment, and training needed to contribute to rebuilding and rehabilitating the electricity sector. He also underscored the depth of the historic ties between the two countries and their brotherly peoples.
The Energy Minister welcomed Egypt’s position, affirming that the outcomes of the talks would strengthen efforts to stabilize electricity supplies and rehabilitate Sudan’s energy infrastructure.
