London (Nabaa Sudan) – British Conservative MP Sir Iain Duncan Smith has raised the issue of the war in Sudan during a session of the United Kingdom (UK) House of Commons, accusing the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of supporting the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, which faces accusations of committing grave violations and atrocities that have caused widespread loss of life and immense human suffering in Sudan.
Smith said the UAE faced “serious accusations” over its support for the militia, calling on the British government to adopt a clear and unequivocal position and condemn what he described as Abu Dhabi’s involvement in the war in Sudan.
The British MP linked these accusations to the nomination of Emirati diplomat Lana Nusseibeh for the post of United Nations Secretary-General, arguing that her candidacy raises questions about its consistency with the principles and values underpinning the international organisation.
Smith urged the British government to oppose Nusseibeh’s nomination, stressing that the United Nations must stand for justice, human rights and respect for international law, and that these principles must not remain mere slogans. He also called for the UAE to be held accountable for the accusations levelled against it over the war in Sudan.
