On the sidelines of the Human Rights Council special session on El-Obeid, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi-Eddin Salem, met with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Volker Türk and senior officials.
The Foreign Minister outlined crimes committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia and its continued attacks against civilians, with particular focus on its recent assault on El-Obeid.
He presented the Government’s plan to dismantle the militia and hold its members accountable, calling for its swift designation as a terrorist organization. He reaffirmed Sudan’s cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms, including the UN Human Rights Country Office in Sudan and the designated expert on the human rights situation in the country.
The Minister also addressed the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) support for the militia, including continued supplies of weapons, foreign mercenaries, and strategic drones used in attacks on El-Obeid.
For his part, High Commissioner Volker Türk welcomed Sudan’s cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms, citing his recent visit to the country, meetings with senior officials, and a field visit to Al-Affadh camp for displaced persons from El-Fasher in Northern State.
He said the OHCHR would continue monitoring violations through its office in Sudan and support efforts to prevent a recurrence of atrocities committed by the RSF militia in El-Fasher or elsewhere in the country.
