The 4th Arab Tobacco Control Conference concluded Sunday at Al-Amal Hall in Port Sudan under the theme, “Tobacco is the Enemy of the Future… Let’s Confront It Together,” drawing Arab health and legislative leaders.
Federal Health Minister Prof. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim highlighted tobacco as a major health threat in Sudan and the region, linking it to cancer, miscarriages, and premature births. He stressed that treating tobacco-related diseases costs far more than the tax revenue it generates and called for strict legislation, public awareness campaigns, and support for smokers to quit before addiction takes hold.
Red Sea State Wali Lt. Gen. Mustafa Mohamed Noor welcomed participants, stressing tobacco’s threat to sustainable development and urging collaboration among legislators, educators, civil society, and youth.
Conference Chair Dr. Ahmed Abdullah Al-Hassan emphasized that holding the event amid current challenges reflects the prioritization of public health, warning against tobacco companies exploiting crises to expand their reach.
Dr. Wael Safwat, President of the Arab Tobacco Control Union, praised Sudan’s commitment and underscored the Union’s efforts to unite Arab nations against tobacco, particularly its targeting of youth and economic drain. He noted the Union’s 2021 WHO award has reinforced preventive policies across the region.
