NEW YORK, (Nabaa Sudan) — Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ambassador Mohi-Eddin Salem met with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The meeting discussed developments in Sudan, efforts to achieve peace, the humanitarian situation, and ways to strengthen the role of the United Nations in supporting efforts to end the war and alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.
The Minister affirmed the Sudanese Government’s commitment to achieving peace and stressed the importance of ensuring that the political process is Sudanese-owned and Sudanese-led. He also underscored the need for the United Nations to play an active and balanced role in supporting peace efforts, while respecting Sudan’s sovereignty and national institutions.
He also reviewed the efforts and initiatives undertaken by the Government to facilitate humanitarian operations and protect civilians, as well as a number of confidence-building measures and humanitarian initiatives.
The two sides exchanged views on ways to strengthen cooperation and coordination between the Sudanese Government and the United Nations and agreed to continue consultations and communication on issues of mutual interest.
