New York (Nabaa Sudan) – A global campaign has been launched to oppose the potential nomination of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) diplomat Lana Nusseibeh for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, under the slogan “No Accountability, No Mandate.”
The campaign comes in response to reports that the United Arab Emirates nominated Nusseibeh on October 21 to lead the international organization. In a video released as part of the campaign, she appeared announcing her candidacy, saying: “I stand to be the Secretary-General of the United Nations because I believe this moment calls for effective leadership.”
The campaign opposing the nomination draws on sharp criticism of the UAE’s foreign and domestic policy record, warning against entrusting leadership of the world’s foremost peace organization to a representative of a government it accuses of arming repressive militias.
The campaign outlined a series of accusations and human rights and UN reports concerning Abu Dhabi. These included accusations that the UAE had facilitated genocide in Sudan by supporting and arming the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia. The campaign cited UN documentation of the killing of more than 6,000 people in El-Fasher over three days, as well as Amnesty International’s findings concerning the use of weapons believed to have been supplied by the UAE.
