Al-Obeid (Nabaa Sudan) – The Central Bank of Sudan (CBOS) has set December 31, 2026, as the final deadline for withdrawing old 500-pound banknotes from circulation. The notes will cease to be legal tender as of January 1, 2027. The bank has urged citizens to deposit any remaining notes of this denomination into their bank accounts before the deadline.
Acting Director General of the Central Bank of Sudan’s Al Obeid branch, Mirghani Hassan Babiker, said the currency replacement process in North Kordofan State was proceeding smoothly. He explained that the current phase focuses on withdrawing old 500-pound notes through direct deposits into bank accounts.
He noted that the withdrawal process began in early November and forms part of the Central Bank’s efforts to promote financial inclusion, expand the use of banking services and support digital transformation.
Babiker explained that the presence of bank branches across the state’s localities provides citizens with outlets for depositing old banknotes. He said Sheikan Locality has approximately 24 bank branches, compared with two branches in each of Om Rawaba and Al-Rahad localities.
He commended the coordination by the North Kordofan State Government, led by Wali Abdel-Khalig Abdel-Latif, in providing the security, administrative, technical and logistical arrangements required to ensure the success of the currency replacement process.
The Central Bank renewed its appeal to citizens and those conducting financial transactions to make use of the designated period and deposit any old 500-pound banknotes in their possession. It affirmed that banks operating in the state are ready to facilitate the procedures and provide the necessary banking services.
