Khartoum (Nabaa Sudan) – Minister of Finance Dr. Gebreil Ibrahim discussed with a delegation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) ways to mobilise financial resources to support Sudan during the post-war phase, meet the needs of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs), and strengthen voluntary return and stabilisation programmes.
The meeting, held at the Ministry of Finance, was attended by Mamadou Badi, UNHCR Director for East Africa; Alexander Mutebi, AfDB Regional Director for East Africa; David Mototoko, the Bank’s Country Director for Sudan; and the ministry’s Director of External Financing.
Gebreil Ibrahim stressed the importance of responding to Sudan’s urgent needs, emphasising the need to support voluntary return programmes and assist Sudanese people both inside and outside the country in ways that help create favourable conditions for stability.
For his part, Mamadou Badi said the delegation’s visit aimed to mobilise financial resources for Sudan’s post-war phase, particularly in areas related to refugees and internally displaced persons. He expressed his hope that Sudan would receive support in addressing the consequences of the war, noting the resources and potential it possesses at the African level.
In a related development, David Mototoko, the AfDB’s Country Director for Sudan, announced that the Port Sudan Water Project would be launched in November 2026, with funding from the Bank and implementation by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). He also noted ongoing efforts to address the challenges facing water facilities in Khartoum State.
Ambassador Jaafar Soumi Tutu, Director of the Peace and Humanitarian Affairs Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the meeting as fruitful, noting that it had addressed several issues offering positive prospects for cooperation in the coming period.
