The regional coordinator for Sudan at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Mamadou Balde, reported that approximately 3.5 million people — including 721,000 refugees — have returned to Sudan as stability gradually improves in areas such as Al-Gezira and Khartoum, as well as other regions of origin.
He affirmed that Sudan continues to endure “the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.”
Balde noted that 11,100 Sudanese refugees arrived in Europe in 2025 — nearly three times the figure recorded in 2024. Meanwhile, neighbouring countries including Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, South Sudan, and Uganda currently host approximately 4.3 million Sudanese refugees. An additional 470,000 refugees are projected to arrive in 2026, alongside thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in border areas.
UNHCR further announced the launch of a response plan, in coordination with partners, to provide food and protection assistance to refugees.
The agency is seeking to mobilize $1.6 billion to support these efforts.
