Five U.S. senators have called on Secretary of State Marco Rubio to take concrete steps to halt external support for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), stating that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the militia's principal external backer, according to the letter, which cites international and UN reports.
The senators said the UAE has provided the RSF with military, financial, and logistical support, citing international reports that documented the training of fighters, the financing of camps, and an increased flow of military equipment to the group.
The signatories urged the U.S. administration to use its influence to help end the war in Sudan by stopping external support to the RSF, including suspending certain U.S. arms sales to the UAE and taking practical measures to cut military and logistical assistance to the militia.
The letter stated that the continued flow of external support to the RSF has contributed to prolonging the conflict and enabling further violations against civilians, calling on the U.S. State Department to take urgent action beyond issuing statements of condemnation.
