The Somali referee Omar Artan revealed that he was interrogated for 11 hours at Miami Airport in the United States upon his arrival to participate in officiating World Cup matches, before being placed in a detention cell and returned to Istanbul.
Artan said, in a statement to The New York Times, that customs officials questioned him about the reasons for his travel to the United States, in addition to questions related to Somali politics and armed groups.
He explained that he presented documents from the International Football Association Board FIFA and photographs documenting his refereeing career, but was later informed of a deportation decision. He added: “After the interrogation, I was placed in a detention cell and flown back to Istanbul.”
Artan concluded by saying: “I think they have a problem with my country.”
