The Wali of Central Darfur State, Mustafa Nasr Al-Deen Tambour, has called for the cancellation of national identification numbers issued in Darfur and the adoption of new procedures for their reissuance, citing exceptional security conditions and cross-border challenges.
Speaking during a Ramadan evening gathering in Port Sudan, Tambour outlined a series of pressing issues confronting the region in a two-hour session attended by media outlets’ editors-in-chief and prominent columnists.
The event was organized by Al-Sharif Center for Studies, Media and Training and focused on security developments, administrative reforms, and civil registration concerns in Darfur.
Tambour stated that the prevailing security environment necessitates a comprehensive review of the national civil registry in Darfur, including the annulment of existing identification numbers and the implementation of new, more stringent issuance mechanisms. He attributed the need for such measures to the exceptional circumstances affecting the region and its porous borders.
The Wali explained that Central Darfur State shares open borders extending approximately 380 kilometres with both Chad and the Central African Republic, underscoring the administrative and security implications of cross-border movement.
Addressing the broader national situation, Tambour affirmed that the Sudanese Armed Forces have successfully confronted the conspiracy since the outbreak of conflict in mid-April 2023. He asserted that the plot to abduct Sudan and impose a new reality on the ground had failed.
He further reiterated that restoring administrative order, rectifying irregularities within the civil registry system, and strengthening governance structures remain among the top priorities of the state government amid ongoing security challenges.
