Darfur Government Presents “Return” as a Path for Addressing RSF Defections

Omdurman, (Nabaa Sudan) – Minister of Culture, Information and Communications and official spokesperson for the Darfur Regional Government, Professor Ahmed Izhaq Shanab, said the door remains open for defectors from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, who wish to return to the country, calling for an end to the fighting and the cessation of hostile actions against civilians.

Speaking at a seminar at the Omdurman Cultural Center on defections within the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, Shanab said groups that had chosen to defect from the force and abandon armed activity had “chosen the path of return,” welcoming the move.

The minister said keeping channels for return open could constitute one of the approaches to addressing defections within the RSF militia, noting that such forums, in his view, provide a “strategic dimension” for the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), the Joint Forces, and the forces supporting them.

Professor Shanab spoke about factors he said had contributed to the defections, including declining support for the RSF militia, the military pressures it faces, and international positions on the war.

He said international positions had divided into two directions, noting that the “louder” voice had focused on condemning violations attributed to the RSF militia.

The minister expressed hope that the seminar would produce practical recommendations for addressing the wave of defections and opening further avenues for those wishing to leave the ranks of the RSF militia.
