HARARE (Nabaa Sudan) – Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi-Eddin Salem, has called for the establishment of a unified African mechanism to confront cross-border rebel movements and terrorist groups, and strengthen regional cooperation in combating organised crime, drug trafficking and smuggling.
The call came as he headed Sudan’s delegation to the 21st Meeting of COMESA Foreign Ministers in the Zimbabwean capital, Harare. He stressed the need to explicitly designate the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as the “rebel militia” and urged the organisation’s foreign ministers to visit Khartoum to witness the scale of destruction caused by the war.
The minister underscored the importance of African coordination in addressing security and political challenges, linking efforts to achieve peace and stability with development, economic integration, food security and border protection.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the COMESA Council of Ministers adopted recommendations reaffirming respect for Sudan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and the independence of its national institutions. The recommendations also rejected foreign interference and military and financial supplies to armed parties, while calling for coordination among African-led peace initiatives to avoid conflicting negotiation tracks.
The recommendations further included support for the arrangements required to return the permanent headquarters of the COMESA Court of Justice to Khartoum and mobilise African development institutions and the private sector to contribute to Sudan’s reconstruction.
