Minni Arko Minnawi: Humanitarian Truce Is Urgent but Will Fail Without Accountability for Militias

The Governor of Darfur Region Minni Arko Minnawi said the humanitarian truce in Sudan represents a necessary step “between hope and collapse,” but it will not be sufficient unless it is incorporated into a comprehensive framework that reflects the Sudanese people’s aspirations for freedom, justice and peace.

Minnawi stated that El-Fashir massacre exposed the scale of human suffering, stressing that children and civilians have become innocent victims of militia shelling, while the world “waited for the massacre to be completed before acting,” amid the complicity of some regional powers, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in delaying international intervention.

He underscored that any humanitarian truce must include the removal of militias from vital sites, the release of abductees, the expulsion of foreign mercenaries, the reopening of main roads, and the participation of all national forces in the peace process—ensuring the agreement is genuinely humanitarian and not merely a document.

Minnawi stressed the need to hold perpetrators of genocide accountable and prevent them from being portrayed as heroes before the international community. He also called for handing over borders, crossings, airports and airstrips to the central authority to prevent violations of national sovereignty, affirming that peace will only be achieved through a genuine will to rebuild a nation that includes everyone and respects the dignity of Sudanese citizens.
